Chapter 1: The Power of the Internet

Links

In this first Speaker's Homepage we point you toward a Website that introduces you to the power of the internet to help you develop your speeches. Think of the internet as a large library. It is not designed to replace the traditional library, but to be used with it. You can find many valuable sources to use in your speeches, or you can find junk!

ALLYN AND BACON'S PUBLIC SPEAKING WEBSITE
This site provides a wealth of ideas and Internet links to help you assess, analyze, research, organize, and deliver your speech. The address is

Activity

One of the starting points for doing research on the Net is to use a site that has done thoughtful screening of sources. Just like in conducting any research, simply because information is available does not mean it is valid or credible information. An example of a site that has been screened to index the popular and useful information is the Librarian's Index to the Internet. A similar site is "The Best Information on the Net" by the staff at St. Ambrose University. Yet another site is the Internet Public Library. To sharpen your skills of using the Web and to get you started thinking about possible speech topics, point your browser to any of these sites:

http://sunsite.berkeley.edu/InternetIndex/

http://www.sau.edu/CWIS/Internet/Wild/index.htm

http://www.ipl.org/

Select one of the topic areas. Explore some of the sources that the indexers of the list have included. Consider these questions:

  1. Which areas of the these sites seem to have the most relevance to your personal and professional interests?

  2. Do any of the topical categories suggest themselves as good areas for a subject for one of your speeches this semester?

  3. Which topics would have the most appeal to your speech-class audience?
