There are four methods of delivering a speech and each has its own advantages and disadvantages. Review the notes below and pages 277-280 and then complete the activity.
Manuscript speaking follows a carefully planned script.
Memorized speaking requires that the speaker memorize the manuscript and present the speech without the aid of notes.
Impromptu speaking is described as "thinking on your feet" or "speaking off the cuff" (278). The speaker has little or no preparation time.
Extemporaneous speaking uses a brief outline of main points as the source of information. The speaker fills in the words as he or she talks.
