Spirit House was founded in 1966 by LeRoi Jones, who breaking with
the past, took the name Imamu Baraka (which he later changed
to Amiri Baraka) and returned to his home in Newark, where he
wrote and produced plays denouncing whites and promoting a wholly black society.
