Chapter 6 Links-Vision

Demonstrations in Auditory Peception:
This web site has been restored to active duty by Dr. Norma Welch. The site includes tutorials on basic acoustics and psychoacoustics as well as links to on-line experiments in audition.

Visionary: A Dictionary of Vision Terminology
Students seeking definitions of terminology used in vision research will find this site of use. The dictionary entries also include line drawings that explain and reinforce vision concepts.

Diagnostic Eye Exams:
This site provides students with an on-line assessment of visual acuity.

The Neural Organization of the Vertebrate Retina
This site contains a comprehensive treatment of the retina. Each segment provides text description, full color images, and quick-time movies. This site can be used as a faculty reference for vision and as a faculty resource for figures to supplement lecture. The site is appropriate for advanced seminar classes.

The Joy of Visual Perception
A Web-based book on vision authored by Dr. Peter K. Kaiser. The book is a mixture of topics on perception and visual neurophysiology. The figures in each section would make excellent additions to any lecture. The section on Master Diagram of the Eye, for example, has a nice line drawing illustrating the various structures of the eye. Other sections include figures on retinal receptors and receptive fields. This site is a resource for faculty looking for figures and artwork and for students who would like a different approach to visual perception.

IllusionWorks: Interactive Illusions
Hall of illusions contains a variety of visual illusions including impossible and ambiguous figures, aftereffects and afterimages, and camouflaged figures. The site also contains a link to auditory illusions.

Color Matters
Web page that explores the concept of color.

Fun Things
Another set of links on illusions and demonstrations of visual perception.

Resources for Teaching Visual Science
This site contains slide files and animation related to visual receptive fields and stereopsis. The site also has a link to the download area for the software program Neurolab.

Exploratorium Exhibits
The Exploratorium provides a number of on-line exhibits illustrating optical illusions.

Tutorials in Sensation/Perception
A tutorial site on sensation and perception that covers color perception, visual receptive fields, Fourier analysis of visual information, and the use of visual information in art.

Cow's Eye Dissection
This site offers an on-line dissection of a cow's eye with accompanying audio file.

Color Vision
A commercial site that covers deficiencies in color vision, and provides an on-line test of color vision.

Spatial Frequency Adaptation
This page provides a cartoon demonstration of spatial frequency adaptation with a link to an explanation of this concept.
