Historical Views of Abnormal Behavior

Abnormal behavior has fascinated humankind from its beginning, and various explanations of the causes of such behavior have developed over the course of history. This chapter presents a chronological overview of the many ways abnormal behavior has been viewed and treated, starting with early man and continuing through the modern era. Mastering this chapter should enable you to learn how these different views of behavior have evolved. In so doing, this chapter aims to help you understand the background for and basis of many of the fundamental issues in our field.
