Substance-Related and Other Addictive Disorders
It has been estimated that many of America's health problems are due to self-injurious practices such as excessive drinking, smoking, and overeating. Such behaviors are considered addictive when these substances or activities, as well as others, are needed and used pathologically. Chapter 10 covers the major addictive disorders, focusing primarily on alcohol and drug abuse and dependence, as well as discussing the non-substance-related addictions of hyperobesity and pathological gambling. A great deal of background information is presented to help document the extent of the various addictive behaviors and their costs to society. Treatment approaches that have been developed for each specific addiction are then described.
