For this activity, log on to a chat room and observe the interactions between the participants. A chat room is a place where real time communication occurs between people who have joined a discussion about a specific topic. You can access chat rooms with Netscape or Explorer or with specialized chat software. There are thousands of chat rooms on the internet. To get started, you might try some popular web sites that have chat rooms. Here are some alternatives:

Follow the directions for joining the chat room. After you have observed the discussion for 15-20 minutes, answer these questions:
1. How long did it take people to disclose information?

2. What kind of information did people disclose?

3. Was the disclosure reciprocated?

4. Was the disclosure helpful to the discussion?
