ACTIVITY 9.8
Revising Your Analysis
You have now received feedback on the first draft of
your analysis from one or more peer reviewers. Now your task is to analyze
the feedback you've received, perhaps engage in a computer-mediated
dialogue with your peers to solicit more feedback, and revise your analysis
based on the feedback.
Step 1: Making Sense of Feedback You've Received
Read your peers' responses carefully and consider the
following items:
Were all the comments clear? Which did you not understand? Did
reading the comments make you wonder about other aspects of your draft?
Reply to the E-mail feedback you received from your peers by asking
for clarification of their comments. If one reader pointed out one problem
with your draft and the others didn't, you might ask the latter to look at
the same section again to see what they think.
Having now read the feedback from you peers, do other questions
occur to you? E-mail your peers with those questions.
How were your peers' comments similar to those you made about the
draft in your reflective statement?
How are the critiques similar? In other words, are there certain
features of your draft all your readers liked? Did they have similar
comments about the content, structure, or style of your draft? Make a list
of all the common comments, both the praise and the constructive
criticism.
How do the critiques differ? Did they comment on different aspects
of your draft? Did one applaud you for a section while another reader
identified that same section as an area of improvement? If you do get
contradictory comments on the same aspects of your draft, what might that
mean? Make a list of all the areas of improvement or contradictory
comments.
What did you learn about writing an effective analysis from
critiquing your writing partners' drafts? Was there anything you said about
their drafts that might equally apply to your own?
Reflect on the lists you made and what you noticed in your peers'
drafts, and develop a revision strategy for yourself. You might begin this
strategy by completing the following phrases:
- What my readers most appreciated in my draft was...
- According to my readers, the areas of improvement for my next
draft include...
- In my next draft I plan on doing... because...
Step 2: Revise Your Draft
Revise your draft based on the feedback you've
received.
