Newsgroups: Resources from Connections
We believe that newsgroups provide one of the most powerful ways of discovering that
writing takes place in a social context and the arguments must accommodate the multiple
positions that develop around any topic.
In Chapter Eight, we approach newsgroups from the angle of research. Although newsgroups
are frequently discounted because some of them are geared toward topics that seem
frivolous, there are a number of newsgroups that are specifically targeted toward
debating serious professional issues. For more information, see
Exercise 8.1: Analyzing a Newsgroup
Exercise 8.2: Critically Reading Newsgroup Messages
Exercise 8.3: Analyzing a Thread in a Newsgroup
In Chapter Thirteen we look at the social components of newsgroups, looking at the way
that groups form communities and how you can join the debates taking place on newsgroups
in successful ways. For more, see
Exercise 13.1: Critically Evaluating a Newsgroup
Exercise 13.2: Composing an Appropriate Post
Additionally, we have excerpted some information from Connections and placed it on-line
for you to refer to. Of particular interest may be our excerpts
