sites based specifically on the readings:
--> Chris Goggans is the Editor of Phrack; be sure to read his "Hacking Around the World", which originally appeared in Phrack, 5.46 (1994).
--> You might want to read Julian Dibbell's article on "The Prisoner: Phiber Optik Goes Directly to Jail" | and Emmanuel Goldstein's "No Time for Goodbyes--Phiber Optik's Journey to Prison"
--> And then, read Joshua Quittner's "Hacker Homecoming", ... "Phiber Optik is out of jail and back online," which originally appeared in Time, 145.4 (Jan. 23 1995).
--> Here's JPB's and Mitchell Kapor's Across the Electronic Frontier ... their joint announcement on July 10, 1990, in Wash., D.C., of the establishment of EFF.
--> You should also read Mitchell Kapor's "Civil Liberties in Cyberspace" | and his Formation Documents and Mission Statement for the EFF
--> Mitch Kapor's interview Traveling Down the Information Highway in TRICYCLE: The Buddhist Review. (Right now, this link/file, like MK's HP file, will not open: There's a note at the HP saying the file is resting! So I assume that after a nap, both files will be reactivated. Hence, I am leaving these links here.)
--> Here's JPB's February, 1996, "Declaration of Independence for Cyberspace", published at a site where you can respond by adding your comment to a word or phrase in the text.
--> J.P. Barlow and Bruce Taylor (president of the National Law Center for Children and Families) debate censorship: To Be or Not To Be (Censored).
--> Read "How Shimomura Snared Prince of Hackers" | and "Hacking Chips on Cellular Phones" Wired 1.1 | Here's an excellent Unofficial Markoff, Mitnick, Shimomura FAQ | and a K. Mitnick: Timeline, which needs to be undated.
--> Read Scott Rosenberg's excellent review-article "Mitnick's Malice, Shimomura's Chivalry".
--> What additional articles can you find by Markoff? Or on Kevin Mitnick? What are the further adventures, if any, of the Mitnick Case? Here, try searching with Alta Vista.
--> In CR, I (vjv) strongly suggested that Mitnick had become the baseline by which to judge all other hackers. As more and more material is made available on him, I am beginning to think that he is being presented in such a way that he more and more appears to be a character in a melodrama. For example, check out TakeDown. What is your impression of this site? How does Shimomura present himself here? The editors of .Net magazine (Vol. 1.12) see some of the information (audio) as "patently bizarre" and state that "Shimomura arrogantly paints himself as a white knight to Mitnick's ugly Quasimodo" (81). What is your assessment of this website? The word on the cyberstreet is that very soon Shimomura's and Markoff's account will be made into a film!
--> Speaking of films: have you seen Hackers? Check out the home page for the philm. Notice who are mentioned as having liked the film! Goldstein and Optik! Have you seen The Net? What are your thoughts about recent films that are based directly or indirectly on the threat coming from cyberspace!? Locate the commerical site for The Net (See Alta Vista above.)
New sites on Freedom of Expression,
Censorship, Security, Hachers/Crackers, etc.:
--> And now here is a Major Challenge: CIEC Reports: ... "At 9AM on Wednesday June 12, the Federal Court in Philadelphia, PA, granted a preliminary injunction against the Communications Decency Act (CDA). It was a 3-0 decision."
--> Hey, be karephul with these links!!
