The majority of students who receive some type of financial assistance for college receive it in the form of a student loan. And, student loans are a viable way for paying for a college education. However, student loans must also be repaid after graduation. So, just as you would shop for an auto loan or a home loan, you will want to shop for your student loan.

Typical questions you may want to ask a lender include:

  • What are the interest rates and are you responsible for paying interest on the loan while you are still in college?
  • If you take out more than one student loan, will the lender consolidate all your loans?
  • When would you be expected to begin repaying the loan and how much will your monthly payments be?
  • What type of repayment options are there?
  • Are there any conditions under which your student loan might be forgiven?
  • Can you begin paying on your student loan while still in college?
  • What happens if you leave college before you complete your degree?
