Getting Involved in Campus Life

Get involved with some type of club or organization on campus during your first semester of college life.

STEP 1: Identify types of activities that you have been involved with in the past. Ask yourself:

  • Why did I choose this type of involvement?
  • What did I like about this experience?

STEP 2: Explore your career goals. Ask yourself:

  • What skills do I need to meet these goals?
  • Are there any areas that I need to explore outside of my major?
  • What type(s) of activities do I like to do for fun?

STEP 3: Research specific organizations that match your interests.

  • Visit the Student Activities Center on your campus to learn about the organization(s) that interest you and how to contact the President(s) of the organization(s).
  • Read your campus newspaper for meeting times and information about the organization(s).
  • Talk with your academic advisor about the organization(s) that interest you.
  • Read your campus calendar of events to learn about various activities or functions of the organization(s) that interest you.

STEP 4: Determine which organization have the most to offer you.

  • Attend a meeting of the organization.
  • Participate in an activity sponsored by the organization.
  • Talk with members of the organization to find out why they are involved with that particular organization.

STEP 5: Make a selection -- Get Involved!

  • Review your class schedule to determine what will work best.
  • Review your career goals to determine which organization nest fits your needs.
  • Review your time commitments to determine which organization will be the best investment of your time.
  • Review the involvement and leadership opportunities the organization can offer you.
