Chapter 11 of Oral Presentations for Technical Communication examines presentations designed to convince an audience to take action. Strategy/action plan presentations are persuasive, but they are more specific than general persuasive presentations, in that they invite the audience to accept a specific and well-prepared solution or action plan to solve the problem. This chapter covers the following topics:

What are Strategy/Action Plan Presentations?

Types of Action Plan Presentations in Technical Communication

Tips for Creating Effective Action Plan Presentations

Preparing Your First Action Plan Presentation

These exercises build on the ideas addressed in Chapter 11:

Presentations and Cyberspace. As you learned in this chapter, audience members do not always have time to read a proposal or report prior to attending a presentation. Are there any ways you might use the Internet to assist your audience in this regard? For example, could you post the report to a Web page and provide specific links for different individuals (managers, development staff, and so on). Could you use email to send audience members reminders or small excerpts of the report in advance? Speculate on how you might use the Internet to assist you in these and other aspects of your action plan presentation.

Presentations and Teamwork. With two or three other students in your class, identify a problem on your campus or in your town and develop an action plan for solving the problem. If you were to present this orally to a person or group who could decide to implement the plan, who would it be? How must you focus your presentation to reflect the characteristics of this audience?

Presentations and International Communication. When preparing an action plan presentation, you will need as much information as possible about any international members of your audience. Establish a list of Web sites that can help you locate country or culture specific information, including the United States Department of State, the Central Intelligence Agency, the USAID, and various embassy or governmental/ministerial sites (an online list of embassy contact information can be found at http://www.embassy.org/embassies/index.html) related to a specific nation or culture.

Presentations and Your Profession. Identify a problem or challenge that professionals in your field currently encounter, and develop an action plan for addressing that problem or challenge. Present the plan to your class (be sure to describe the problem clearly)
