CHAPTER 4 THE EARLY CHILDHOOD AND ELEMENTARY SCHOOL YEARS: SPECIAL EDUCATION, INCLUSION, AND COLLABORATION

Video Program: Inclusion

This program is probably used best with Chapter 1 or Chapter 4. Josh is profiled in Chapter 11, People with Autism

DESCRIPTION OF THE INDIVIDUALS

Josh (profiled in Chapter 11) is a child with autism. He has been enrolled in his neighborhood school for the past five years. His first three years were particularly challenging for him and his teachers. He is now in fourth grade where one of his best teachers is a friend named Marshall.

Greg is a middle school student with behavior disorders. He spends all of each school day in general education classes with his peers. Although his teachers like him, he regularly taxes their patience and tests their classroom management systems. His mother appreciates the school staff and the ways in which they consistently communicate with her.

Tonya is a high school student who is enrolled in chemistry and other demanding classes. Her success as a student is attributable to a number of factors. First, she wants to learn and has been given a chance to use her intellect and talents. Second, she has access to a number of well-trained peer tutors who genuinely enjoy working with her. They assist her with homework, test preparations, and note taking. Her teachers have been willing to make adjustments for her unique needs and to seek assistance when they have questions or concerns.
