The CAGE questionnaire is a self-report screening
tool for alcoholism. It consists of four questions:
Have you felt the need to Cut down on your
drinking?
Do you feel Annoyed by people complaining
about your drinking?
Do you ever feel Guilty about your drinking?
Do you ever drink an Eye-opener in the morning
to relieve the shakes?
Two or more affirmative responses suggest
that the client is a problem drinker. A discussion of the CAGE questionnaire
and other alcoholism screening techniques appears in the following article:
Allen, J.P., Eckardt, M.J., and Wallen, J. Screening for alcoholism: techniques
and issues. Public Health Reports 103:586-592, 1988.
