Speech Preparation

    Postspeech Analysis Worksheet

Postspeech analysis helps you polish your speaking skills and allows you to learn from your mistakes and successes.

There are four primary means to evaluate your speaking skills after the speech.

    1. Nonverbal Responses (e.g., audience applause)

    2. Verbal Responses (e.g., when an audience member says, "Great speech.")

    3. Survey Responses (e.g., asking audience members questions prepared in a written survey)

    4. Behavioral Responses (e.g., what did your audience do as a result of your speech)

Take a moment to think about your speech and focus on the first two ways of evaluating your speech: Nonverbal and Verbal responses. Write down some notes in the space below based on your observations.

    Nonverbal Responses

    1. Did the audience clap at the end of your speech? If so, did it seem sincere?
    2. Did any of the audience members smile at you at the end of your speech? How did that make you feel?
    3. Did any of the audience members appear distracted during your speech? For instance, were they reading the newspaper, looking out the window?
    4. What else did you observe about the audience's nonverbal responses?

    Verbal Responses

    1. Were you given any verbal feedback after your speech? If so, what was it?
    2. Did any audience member comment on your speech topic? If so, what were their comments?
    3. What comments did you receive from your instructor?
