If you're like most instructors, you're eager to try new and interesting teaching tools in your abnormal psychology course. Check what's available to you with the Nietzel, Speltz, McCauley, and Bernstein textbook:

Instructor's Manual
Prepared by Peggy Nash of Broward Community College. Dr. Nash is a widely recognized attendee of the National Institute on the Teaching of Psychology. She has been professor of the year at BCC twice and was awarded an endowed Teaching chair and the Carnegie Foundation Award for teacher of the year for the state of Florida in 1995/1996. Dr. Nash's goal in writing the Instructor's Manual was to make her teaching expertise available to new instructors by providing them with a wealth of materials to bring their course to life. Although the manual was designed with newer instructors in mind, experienced instructors are sure to find new resources there as well.

For each chapter, there are:
  • Chapter Outline A detailed outline of the entire chapter, written so that it can function as lecture notes for the busy instructor.
  • Lecture Makers Suggestions for classroom activities and demonstrations, each of which includes its purpose, a suggested lecture introduction, a description of the demonstration, and a capsule summary. Many of the Lecture Makers provide the instructor with handouts or in-class quizzes as part of the activity.
  • Resources Other teaching resources, including listings of videos, films, and directories of resource organizations.
  • Transparencies A listing of all of the acetate transparencies available for the chapter, including the text figure number and page number as appropriate.
Test Bank
Prepared by Susan K, Fuhr of Weber State University, a set of over 2,500 multiple-choice and short answer/essay test items. Each item is categorized by type (applied, conceptual, factual) and difficulty level (easy, medium, challenging), and cross-referenced by text page and whether it is also included in the student Practice Tests. Each chapter has at least 65 percent applied items and roughly 15 percent conceptual and 15 percent factual items.

A computerized Test Bank is also available from ESAtest, in Macintosh, DOS, and Windows versions.

Transparencies
A set of 80 acetate transparencies, both from the text and from other sources. Each transparency is keyed, on a cover sheet, to a text page and to a text figure, if appropriate.

A variety of video resources for you to choose from, including:
  • A 90-minute case video, featuring (1) Devon, an autistic boy, whose mother is interviewed by pediatric psychologist Sandra D'Angelo; and (2) Lionel Aldridge, former Green Bay Packers defensive end, diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, interviewed by Mike Nietzel. Each case also provides a description of the disorder, as well as treatments each individual received.
  • A series of videos from American Psychiatric Press, Inc., on diagnostic issues and treatments for a variety of disorders.
