Chapter 16: Interest Groups
5/17/99

The National Rifle Association (NRA) held its annual meeting in Denver, Colorado in the aftermath of the shootings at Columbine High School, which is in a suburb of Denver.

The group decided to shorten its meeting and to eliminate its gun exhibition and sale. Despite these adjustments, thousands of protesters gathered outside the meeting site. They were upset that the NRA still went ahead with its meeting after the tragic shootings, and that the group still was adamantly in favor of individuals' right to bear arms. In the short run, the NRA has become a lightening rod for the heated debate on gun control in this nation. For a description of the programs offered by the group and policies that it is advocating, then go to National Rifle Association at http://www.nra.org/.
