EXERCISES/CLASS ACTIVITIES
1. Investigating the five basic school counselor interventions. Visit
an elementary school, a middle school and a high school that has a counselor.
Find out which of the basic interventions are being utilized and to what
extent. Report your findings to the class.
2. Implementing a comprehensive developmental counseling program. Have students spend all, or at least part of a day, each with an elementary, a middle-school, and a high school counselor. When appropriate ask to be an observer in some of their activities. Visit also with school administrators. Ask each individual about his/her ideas of fully implementing a comprehensive, developmental counseling program in that school (district). Alternative: Invite a counselor and an administrator to your class to discuss the same ideas.
3. Higher education opportunities - A. Have students survey post-secondary schools in your region to determine the types of positions currently staffed by personnel with masters degrees in counseling or equivalent. In addition to checking employment opportunities in college counseling centers, student services, and placement offices, have them contact different college advising offices, continuing education, non-traditional students, etc.
4. Higher education opportunities -B. Have students survey the last 6 months of "want ads" in the Chronicle of Higher Education and Counseling Today (formerly Guideposts) published by ACA to determine types of positions that are currently available and qualifications desired.
