Defining the Varieties of Social Influence

The ways that we might influence other through social means are many and varied. The purpose of this exercise to help you learn the definitions of the different kinds of social influence. The definitions of ten forms of social influence are given below. Your task is to identify each definition writing the correct term (the name of the form of social influence being defined) on the blank line shown before each definition.

5. The tendency to return favors that others have extended to us.

6. The tendency to obey others whom we consider superior to us.

7. The substitution of one's personal identity by identification with a specific group's values and goals.

8. The tendency for the initial position of a group to become exaggerated during the discussion preceding a decision.

9. The tendency to avoid dissent in the attempt to reach group consensus in the course of decision making.

10. A change in one's actions as the result of an explicit request or attempt made by another person.
