Description of Available Materials and Intended Uses

The Discussion and Application (D&A) materials available at this site duplicate the printed activities that follow each chapter in the textbook. In digital form, the materials support these uses:

  • Teaching in computer classrooms
Instructors can load the materials onto a server or student disks so that the students can respond at the computer.

  • Instructor adaptation and modification
Instructors can customize the materials by modifying activities, by eliminating some activities, or by adding their own.

  • Creation of instructor course packs
Some of the activities, particularly in the copyediting chapters, require students to mark on hard copy. In print format, these materials provide space for this marking. Instructors can print originals from these digital versions and reproduce them for student workbooks.

Print and Online Formats

Content of the materials in print and online formats is the same, but materials are formatted differently for print and online media.

Print: The print versions use type appropriate for printing and marking on hard copy: black type, some double spacing. Use these versions if you want to make paper copies for students.

Online: The online versions are formatted for responses on the computer. They incorporate cells for student responses. They also use typography and some color cues to define different types of text:

blue, sans serif type for directions
dark red, sans serif for prompts to which students should respond
black, serif for examples and the students' responses

Use these versions if you want students to work on the activities at the computer.
