The short answer feature works the same way as the multiple choice and true/false questions. In this case, the student would type in his answer, click submit, and would be given instant feedback. In the upper left-hand corner of the screen next to the question you many noticed the check box. If a student feels they have thoroughly learned the answer to a certain question, all they have to do is click on the check box, and the question will not be presented as often. It is important to note that all of the questions are presented randomly.
