Joanne May Herbert is a faculty member in the Department of Curriculum, Instruction, and Special Education at the University of Virginia where she teaches courses in instruction, assessment, and educational research. Her recent research examines the effects of using text-based and videotaped cases with preservice teachers A former teacher in the Charlottesville Public Schools, Herbert has 15 years experience working with children in kindergarten through fourth grade. Much of her research has been conducted in elementary settings where she has examined teacher and student thinking, more and less effective ways to intervene with classroom teachers, and the effects of formative evaluation on teachers and students. Her writings have been published in a variety of professional journals and publications. She is also co-author, with colleague Bob McNergney, of the text, Foundations of Education, (2nd ed., 1998). Herbert concludes by describing a Web-based course that she co-designed using multimedia cases of contemporary classroom issues, the content of which is applicable to preservice, inservice and graduate teacher preparation programs.
