Academic Programs, Departments, and Courses in Technical Communication
If you are a teacher -- especially if you are a teacher of technical communication -- take a look at what's going on in colleges and universities in the field of technical communication:
- Academic Programs in Technical Communication. The Association of Teachers of Technical Writing (ATTW) maintains a list for PhD, MA/MS, BA/BS, major, minor, and certificate programs in technical communication. (Programs at two-year colleges are not listed.)
Online Courses or Partially Online Courses in Technical Communication
- ATTW Syllabi and Teaching Materials Site. Maintained by Russ Kahn (State University of New York, Institute of Technology at Utica/Rome), this collection of the Association of Teachers of Technical Writing (ATTW) lists syllabi for many introductory and advanced courses in technical communication.
- Globewide Network Academy: Distance Learning Catalogue. Considered one of the largest catalogues of online training and education programs and individual courses; search on technical writing or technical communication.
- World Lecture Hall. Maintained at the University of Texas, the World Lecture Hall (WLH) contains links to pages created by faculty worldwide who are using the Web to deliver class materials.
- The Global Campus. Maintained by CAl State Long Beach, the Global Campus is a collaborative multimedia database containing a variety of educational materials such as images, sounds, text, and video to be used for nonprofit, educational purposes.
- Orange Coast College's Technical-Writing Certificate Program. Coordinated by D.K. Pierstorff, Associate Fellow, Society for Technical Communication; Faculty Member of the Year, Orange Coast College, 1998; and recipient of the Excellence Award,1998, National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development.
- Technical Communication Program. Offered by Seneca College of Applied Arts and Technology, a one-year full-time graduate program with co-op work placement. Created to meet the growing demand in the Toronto area, the program prepares graduates to work as technical communicators (writers, editors, documentation specialists) in a variety of fields, including computer and software development, manufacturing and the financial sector.
- Jim Collier's Technical Writing Course at Virgina Tech. Lectures, assignment notes, chatrooms, threaded discussion, exercises, and more from a technical writing course at Virginia Tech.
- Mary F. O'Sullivan's Writing Course Information Site. A web-based course in technical report writing at Western Wisconsin Technical College.
- University of Waterloo Technical Writing ENGL210E. A fully online and interactive second-year university course in technical writing. Includes a virtual office with a floor plan of the workspace in which students find their work assignments, read course materials, talk to others, find the tools needed for document creation, and obtain help when they need it.
- Online Technical Writing. An introductory technical writing course offered by David A. McMurrey (Austin Community College, Austin, Texas).
