Exploring the World Wide Web
using Netscape
The World Wide Web (WWW) is part of the Internet. WWW sites (or pages) are full of useful information and are easy to access using a program such as Netscape. Itıs like having access to a really neat, up-to-date library that is as big as the world. To use the WWW, you need to know how to point and click (and, of course, what to point at).
To start Netscape...
* Find the Netscape icon and double click it.
Helpful Hints for Web Browsing
Every WWW page has an URL (an address that uses the format of the Uniform Resource Locator). The URL for the CSUDH home page (starting place) looks like this: http://www.csudh.edu (http refers to the kind of program used to create the display, www means that it is part of the World Wide Web, csudh.edu is our university).
You can go to a place (an URL) on the WWW in several ways.
* Click on text shown in color (usually blue or purple). Clicking on such links takes you directly to another page (and maybe around the world!).
* In the program called Netscape, you can use the File menu to choose Open Location or click on the Open button, and type in an URL (it will probably start with http:// and have the computer address for a university, company, or organization).
* You can click the buttons at the top of the screen (e.g., Back, Forward, Home) to move to places you have already been.
* You can also search, if you know some words that describe what you want to find. To begin a search, click on the Net Search button above the page display. Type descriptive words in the box that appears. Click on the word Search or press ENTER. You may also open one of the following locations:
http://www.yahoo.com http://www.hotbot.com
http://www.altavista.digital.com http://www.lycos.com
If the display is too long to fit on the screen, click on the up and down arrows of the scroll bar (gray area at the right of the screen). This moves the display up and down.

Work in teams of two.
Example
What is the full name of the person who invented the Celsius temperature scale?

b. Pick out the most important words (key words) in the question. In this case, Celsius is the main word we want to find.
c. Type the key words or words into the white box on the screen. You may need to click inside the box first.
d. Press RETURN or click on a button that says Search (or something similar). The search engine will look for places that match your word(s).
e. You should see a list of places that contain your key word(s). Click on any of the places to see if it has the answer. Remember to use the up and down arrows to see more of the list.
f. If one place doesnıt have the answer, click on the Back button and try another place.
g. When you find the answer, write down the place you found it (URL). It will appear in a box near the top of the screen. It will probably start with http://. Also write down the answer to the question.
