C.h.a.p.t.e.r 5: ReSearch

What follows are suggestions for How to research the various themes--Virtual Books and Libraries--discussed and exemplified on the Net and the WWW.

(If you should need additional help with using the search engines referred to below, then turn to Appendix A in CR2 and to the Appendices on line. And if you should have any questions or suggestions, simply drop me a note at VVitanza@aol.com and I will try to get back to you as soon as possible.)

Go to Ch. 5:    Recommended Links    Bibliographies/Webographies

Make a search for everything from "virtual library" to "cybrary" (I have seen the word used!)

. . . on the various search engines, such as HotBot, WebCrawler, Lycos. (If you need help with this search, see the Appendix A.)

I tried at WebCrawler and got this list returned: Notice: When you click on the Virtual Library link it will open a new browser window. You should be able to work with both windows open, reducing the size of one or both.

The query "virtual library" found 5748 documents and returned 25:

If you point to some of these sites variously referred to as World-Wide Web Virtual Library, you will reach one big site by that name, which is housed virtually at Charles Sturt University. From here you can find most everything.

Another site is The World-Wide Web Virtual Library: Subject Catalogue, where you will find:

The WWW Virtual Library

This is a distributed subject catalogue. See Category Subtree, Library of Congress Classification (Experimental), Top Ten most popular Fields (Experimental), Statistics (Experimental).

Mail to maintainers of the specified subject or www-request@dubois.fisk.edu to add pointers to this list, or if you would like to contribute to administration of a subject area. The Virtual Library is currently mirrored at the University of East Anglia (UK), Fisk University (USA), Penn State University (USA) and Stanford University (USA).

(Since the site, like most sites, is updated constantly, what you see here might not be what you find later and even much later at the site, but at least you can get an impression of how it is organized.)

Try searching for the following:

cybrary

borges + library

virtual books

death of books

future of libraries

future of books

etc.
